Commodities Manager

Primary Responsibilities
The primary function of this position is to be responsible for leading and/or supporting Global Elster Worldwide Supply Chain strategy development and deployment for key assigned commodities across our business unit. The Commodity Manager will negotiate formal supply agreements in close concert with the Vice President of Supply Chain Management to deliver year over year improvements in component material cost, quality, availability and inventory.

This opportunity requires a highly motivated supply chain professional to work in a fast paced aggressive environment dealing with Metals and Bronze Casting commodities.  Experience with implementing Quality Improvement Processes and Supplier Management Improvement targets is a must. Additional responsibilities include striving for continuous performance in areas such as on time delivery, cost, quality and new product development; reduction in lead-time, inventory management, plus procurement support over a number of supply accounts as well as negotiating and implementing long-term contracts. Supplier partnership development is essential with our global supply base throughout Europe, Asia and South America.  The preferred candidate may be required to travel domestically and internationally.  This position reports to the Supply Chain Team Leader.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• High level negotiation skills. Competent at leading a negotiation session.

• Demonstrated knowledge of lean manufacturing processes and project management skills.

• Knowledge of ERP systems and supply chain management systems is a requirement.

• International sourcing experience is a must.

• Demonstrated experience and success working in a fast paced environment satisfying a matrix of multiple internal customers.

• Strategic planning and thinking skills with an analytical mindset.

• Highly proficient in Microsoft applications such as PowerPoint, Excel and Word.

• Supplier Development - Work with engineering and supplier quality management to develop new suppliers with continuous improvement processes for low cost and high quality.

• Negotiations - Be the lead negotiator with key suppliers for specific commodities to deliver stated cost reduction PIP-S goals.

• Formal Sourcing Process - Lead the strategic sourcing process including RFQ development, quotation review (traditional bid tabulations and reverse auctions), supply agreement negotiations and supplier management development. Lead sourcing meetings with engineering, quality, and manufacturing to obtain team consensus on sourcing plans/targets.

• Low Cost Country Global Sourcing - Lead and/or support Elster’s low cost sourcing objectives for key commodities for leveraged year over year net cost reductions.

• VA/VE - Work closely with long term key suppliers to manage this tier one supply base for productivity and cost down objectives through the use of VA/VE management tools.

• Supplier Kanbans - Work closely with the core supplier base and our lean manufacturing group to actively integrate these suppliers into our plant through the use of Kanbans and other related inventory management tools.

• Take control and manage the supplier relationship for the major suppliers in the assigned commodity spend category.

• Maintain a working knowledge of world class supply chain processes to ensure that existing Elster AMCO processes are targeted to attain excellence.

• Assist in mentoring and training the Buyer and Planners in “Best Practices”.

• Manage the category spend in your assigned commodity group to identify, control, and leverage our material expenditures.  We must always purchase each component part price paid to our supplier at a price below our standard cost for that item.

• The Commodity Manager is responsible for assisting the Vice President of Supply Chain Management Group to mentor and train the Buyers and Planners in best practices of supply chain management.

• The Commodity Manager is responsible to maintain the Standard Cost for each component part in our MAPICS System. In addition, it is the responsibility of the Commodity Manager to maintain accurate and up to date purchase prices and an effective PPV report.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
BS or BA degree in business or related field plus up to fiver years of experience as a supply management professional in an OEM or automotive manufacturing environment. Alternative experience, a special combination of education and experience and/or demonstrated accomplishments.  NAPM certification is strongly preferred. Must be able to meet deadlines over a variety of projects along with achieving targets associated with cost, inventory, and lead-time and supply base reduction.
